Old town/Chinatown in Portland is historically a very culturally rich part of town. In the later years however it has become known as a place where homeless people wander the streets during the day and young people come to drink and party till late at night. Our task was to make a school for art and music to bring the culture and history of the site back to life.
Early in the term we made an artifact as a realized depiction of our concept statement. My artifact was two computer mainframes showing the difference between day and night activities in the area and how I wanted to reconnect people to both sides.
In response to this for my project I made a gym (accommodating daytime activities) and a small cultural theater (nighttime activities) on opposite sides of the site. These two where bridged with the art and music classrooms lifted up from the ground floor for security and to create outdoors space beneath. This space works as classes during the day and double as 24 hours workshops.
“The Multi Cultural School of Art and Music reconnects people of Portland to Oldtown/Chinatown by being a cultural hub where people can express themselves.”
