Winter 2009 –  ARCH 180 – Instructor: Robert Young

For this project the task was to make a pavilion where an individual or individuals could read the Deep Space map we made before. Since my map’s main idea was human coexistence with nature, I wanted to show transcendence from human traditionally made design to a design with nature. To try to achieve this I made the entrance like a hallway closed off from the outside, and as you go through the building there is gradually more space between the lumber opening up the building to the outside.

Finally the lumber turns into columns to represent trees and nature as you step of the concrete slab and on to a natural ground. The roof was made to seem like it was weaved in a way to talk about how we have to weave our design in with nature. I also chose to make the roof straight so that on rainy days (like there often are in Portland) the water would make the roof seem like it’s alive in a way. Finally I built a bench where the individuals experiencing the pavilion can sit and read the Deep Space map while looking down at Portland.
